I decided to preach last Sunday on that biblical text “The lion shall lie down with the lamb!”
But sadly, it’s not in the Bible!
Isaiah says that the Wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and then goes on to say that the lion shall eat straw with the ox.
Anyway, there are three words that describe a lion’s nature: CRUEL – CRAFTY – COURAGEOUS!
The devil is as CRUEL as a lion. 1 Peter 5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour…”
He is a created being. Therefore, he is not omnipresent, neither is he omniscient, and besides that, he is not omnipotent. Those are the attributes of the Lord God.
Satan was defeated at Calvary. Colossians 2:15 “Spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them, triumphing over them.”
The Lion of the Tribe of Judah took the roaring lion of hell, and destroyed his power. Be aware of Satan’s wicked schemes, but don’t ascribe more power to him than he has!
(Romans 16:20) “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.”
“A living dog is better than a dead lion” Eccles 9:4
James 4:7 “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, & he will flee from you.”
Submit to God. Resist the enemy. And one last thing: Stay with the flock! That way you’ll be safe.
The world is CRAFTY like a lion. Always waiting to trap us: Psalms 17:12 “Like as a lion that is greedy lurking in secret places.” A good example of this is Samson. They were usually waiting just outside his bedroom door! – “lurking in secret places.”
That’s how sneaky the world is! Trying to catch us out! The world accepts those who are an abomination to God. And now the Church looks unforgiving. But Isaiah warns: “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil,!”
Do you think we can be friends with the world? We are fooling ourselves! “Don’t you know friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” James 4:4.
But there is a positive side to a lion’s nature: the lion is COURAGEOUS. This word describes the righteous. Proverbs 28:1 “The wicked flee when no man pursues: but the righteous are bold as a lion.”
We can be bold because we know these are the last days. Daniel – who spent a night with lions – saw a vision of these last days: Daniel 11:32 “…The people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.”
And the righteous are bold as a lion, because they know God is in control. Satan is the god of this age, but not god of this world.
Many Christians are unwitting DUALISTS. ie: they believe in two gods: The God of Heaven and the “god of this world.” They blame “the god of this world” for the bad things, and praise the God of Heaven for the good things.
Q: Who is in control of the world today?
A: Psalms 115:3 “But our God is in the heavens: He does all that He pleases!”
And He has a plan and a purpose for you and me!
